How to Use a Neti Pot: The Ancient Nasal Cleansing Practice

The Neti Pot has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. If you suffer from chronic hay fever, nasal congestion, or frequent colds, a Neti Pot may be one of the most effective natural tools available.

What Is a Neti Pot?

A Neti Pot is a small vessel — now also available in ceramic and stainless steel — known as Jala Neti in Ayurveda. It physically flushes allergens and dust from the nasal passages.

The Benefits of Regular Neti Pot Use

  • Sinus congestion relief — physically clears blocked nasal passages
  • Allergy relief — flushes out dust and allergens before they trigger a reaction
  • Reduced frequency of colds — a well-hydrated nasal passage is more resistant to infection
  • Improved breathing — clearer nasal passages improve airflow and oxygen delivery
  • Better sleep — nasal congestion is a leading cause of disrupted sleep and snoring
  • Mental clarity — clear nasal passages are associated with improved mental clarity and reduced brain fog
  • Reduced post-nasal drip — regular flushing reduces the mucus accumulation that causes post-nasal drip

How to Use a Neti Pot: Step-by-Step

What you need:

  • A Neti Pot
  • Distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water (never use tap water directly)
  • Non-iodised salt or a saline sachet (approximately 1/4 teaspoon per 240ml of water)

Steps:

  1. Mix your saline solution — not hot or cold, body temperature is ideal
  2. Stand over a sink and tilt your head sideways at approximately 45 degrees
  3. Insert the spout of the Neti Pot into the upper nostril, creating a seal
  4. Breathe through your mouth and allow the solution to flow in through the upper nostril and out through the lower nostril
  5. Use approximately half the solution, then switch sides
  6. Once complete, gently blow your nose to clear any remaining solution — do not blow forcefully
  7. Allow your nose to drain fully before lying down

Important Safety Guidelines

  • Always use sterile or distilled water — tap water can contain microorganisms that are safe to drink but not safe for nasal use
  • Use the correct salt concentration — too much is drying, too little is uncomfortable
  • Clean your Neti Pot thoroughly after each use and allow it to air-dry completely
  • Do not use a Neti Pot if you have a completely blocked nose — wait until there is some airflow
  • Consult your healthcare provider if you have had recent nasal surgery

How Often Should You Use a Neti Pot?

During allergy season, once or twice daily. Once daily in the morning is the traditional Ayurvedic recommendation. Long-term daily use is safe for most people.
