How to Make Your Own Herbal Tea Blends at Home
Making your own herbal tea blends is one of the most empowering wellness rituals you can adopt. You choose exactly what goes in, you control the quality of every ingredient, and you can tailor each blend precisely to your health goals — whether that’s better sleep, calmer digestion, stronger immunity, or hormonal balance.
It’s also far more cost-effective than buying pre-blended teas — and infinitely more satisfying.
What You Need to Get Started
- Dried herbs — source from a reputable supplier. Look for vibrant colour, strong aroma, and no signs of moisture or mould.
- A kitchen scale — for consistent ratios
- Glass jars with lids — for storing your blends away from light and moisture
- Tea bags — our Unbleached Drawstring Tea Bags are ideal for pre-filling individual servings, or our Reusable Infusion Bags for loose leaf brewing
- Labels — always label your blends with the name, ingredients, and date
The Golden Rules of Herbal Blending
1. Start with a Base Herb (50–60%)
Your base herb provides the bulk and the primary therapeutic action. Good base herbs include rooibos, chamomile, peppermint, and lemon balm — all mild, pleasant-tasting, and broadly beneficial.
2. Add a Supportive Herb (20–30%)
Your supportive herb enhances and complements the base. For example, ginger pairs beautifully with peppermint for digestion; lavender complements chamomile for sleep.
3. Add an Accent Herb (10–20%)
Your accent herb adds flavour complexity or a specific therapeutic boost. Hibiscus adds tartness and antioxidants. Rose petals add floral notes and mood support. Cinnamon adds warmth and blood sugar support.
4. Taste and Adjust
Brew a small test batch before filling your bags. Adjust ratios to taste — blending is an art as much as a science.
5 Starter Blends to Try at Home
1. Deep Sleep Blend
- 50% chamomile flowers
- 30% lemon balm leaf
- 20% lavender flowers

2. Digestive Calm Blend
- 50% peppermint leaf
- 30% fennel seed (lightly crushed)
- 20% chamomile flowers
Brew at 90–95°C for 7–10 minutes. Drink after meals.
3. Immune Shield Blend
- 50% rooibos
- 30% elderberry (dried)
- 20% ginger root (dried, sliced)
Brew at 95–100°C for 10–15 minutes. Drink daily during winter or when feeling run down.
4. Hormone Harmony Blend
- 50% spearmint leaf
- 30% raspberry leaf
- 20% fennel seed
Brew at 90–95°C for 7–10 minutes. Drink 1–2 cups daily throughout your cycle.
5. Golden Anti-Inflammatory Blend
- 40% rooibos
- 30% turmeric root (dried, sliced)
- 20% ginger root (dried)
- 10% cinnamon bark
Simmer for 10–15 minutes. Add a pinch of black pepper and a little coconut oil or honey to taste.
How to Fill and Store Your Tea Bags
- Measure your blend by weight for consistency
- Use approximately 2–3g of blend per bag (adjust to taste)
- Fill your Unbleached Drawstring Tea Bags and pull the drawstring closed
- Store filled bags in a sealed glass jar away from light, heat, and moisture
- Use within 6–12 months for best potency
Tip: Pre-filling a week’s worth of tea bags on a Sunday makes your daily tea ritual effortless — and means you’re far more likely to stick to it.
