Laughter Yoga: The Science of Joy For Individuals or Corporates
Laughter is one of the most powerful, accessible, and underutilised wellness tools available to us. It costs nothing, requires no equipment, and can transform the energy of a room in seconds. Yet most of us laugh far less than we should — and our health, mood, and workplace culture suffer for it.
What Is Laughter Yoga?
Laughter Yoga is a unique practice that combines intentional laughter exercises with yogic breathing (pranayama). Developed by Dr Madan Kataria in Mumbai in 1995, it is now practised in over 110 countries and is backed by a growing body of scientific research.
The key insight behind Laughter Yoga is that the body cannot distinguish between genuine and simulated laughter — both produce the same physiological and psychological benefits. This means you don’t need to be in a good mood, hear a joke, or feel funny to benefit. You simply begin laughing — and the body responds.

Research consistently shows that laughter:
- Reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) by up to 39%
- Boosts endorphins — the body’s natural feel-good chemicals
- Strengthens the immune system by increasing natural killer cell activity
