Palo Santo: The Sacred Wood That Clears Energy, Calms the Mind & Elevates Your Space
Palo Santo: The Sacred Wood That Clears Energy, Calms the Mind & Elevates Your Space
Long before aromatherapy became a wellness trend, indigenous cultures of South America were burning Palo Santo — a wild tree native to Ecuador, Peru, and the Yucatan Peninsula — in sacred ceremony. Its name translates simply as holy wood, and for good reason. The smoke of Palo Santo has been used for centuries to clear negative energy, invite positive presence, deepen meditation, and create a sense of the sacred in everyday spaces.
Today, Palo Santo is experiencing a global renaissance — and for those drawn to intentional living, it is one of the most accessible and powerful tools available.
What Makes Palo Santo Special?
Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) belongs to the same botanical family as frankincense and myrrh — two of the world's most revered sacred resins. Its wood contains high concentrations of limonene, a naturally occurring compound with well-documented anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and mood-lifting properties.
Unlike many incense products, sustainably sourced Palo Santo is harvested only from trees that have fallen naturally and been left to rest for several years. This resting period is what allows the sacred resin to develop fully within the wood — giving it its distinctive warm, sweet, slightly citrus scent.
Benefits of Palo Santo
- Clears stagnant or negative energy from spaces, objects, and the aura
- Deepens meditation and creates a sense of sacred presence
- Reduces stress, anxiety, and mental restlessness
- Uplifts mood through its natural limonene content
- Supports respiratory health — traditionally used for colds, flu, and congestion
- Acts as a natural insect repellent
- Creates a grounding, calming atmosphere in the home
- Enhances breathwork, yoga, and mindfulness practices
How to Use Palo Santo
- Set your intention — before lighting, take a breath and bring to mind what you wish to release or invite into your space.
- Light the tip — hold your Palo Santo stick at a 45-degree angle and light the tip with a candle or match. Allow it to burn for 30–60 seconds.
- Blow out the flame — gently blow out the flame so the wood smoulders and produces smoke. It will naturally extinguish itself after a short time.
- Move through your space — carry the smouldering stick through each room, paying particular attention to corners, doorways, and windows where energy tends to stagnate.
- Use on yourself — move the smoke around your body from feet to crown to cleanse your aura.
- Rest it safely — place the stick in a fireproof dish or abalone shell to rest. It will extinguish on its own.
Tip: Use Palo Santo at the beginning of your meditation, yoga practice, or journalling session to signal to your mind and body that it is time to shift into a more present, intentional state.
When to Use Palo Santo
Palo Santo is wonderfully versatile. Use it to cleanse your space after an argument or a difficult day, before and after guests visit, at the start of a new week or moon cycle, before meditation or breathwork, when moving into a new home, or simply whenever your space feels heavy or stagnant.
Palo Santo & Ayurveda
While Palo Santo originates in South America rather than India, its properties align beautifully with Ayurvedic principles. Its warming, grounding, and clarifying qualities make it particularly beneficial for Vata and Kapha imbalances — helping to settle an anxious mind, lift low mood, and restore a sense of clarity and presence.
Bringing the Sacred Into the Everyday
One of the most beautiful things about Palo Santo is how effortlessly it elevates the ordinary. A few moments of smoke, a conscious breath, a clear intention — and your space is transformed. Your nervous system settles. Your mind clears. Something shifts.
This is the power of ritual. Not grand gestures, but small, consistent acts of intention that remind us who we are and what we value.
